OPEN LETTER TO VENUES
RE: LOCAL MUSIC WEEK 2012
Hello from Local 782 - San Antonio’s Music Coalition,
For the last two years we have organized a city-wide event known as Local Music Week. We are currently organizing for Local Music Week (LMW) 2012 and once again we are asking you to partner with us. LMW 2012 will take place during the first week of April (1-7) from Sunday to Monday and this year we are working to have an official city proclamation on the steps of City Hall.
Local Music Week was created by Local 782 as a part of Local Media Month (April). Local Media Month was established by Media Justice League (parent org to Local 782) and national partners to bring attention to community made media. LMW serves somewhat as a local music campaign. The goal of this campaign is to reach people who don’t normally come out to local shows, making them aware of San Antonio’s growing and diverse live music community. We as Local 782 want to bring some media attention to the music community as a whole.
We embrace that all parts, from the musicians, to the venues, to the fans, and everything in between are equally important. We also embrace a sense of unity. This is one reason we decided to approach the venues firsthand, as you house live shows and carry your own influence over the bands. Likewise, Local Music Week is designed so that no one venue or event stands above any other, with our online calendar of events having a streamlined feel to it.
The events Local 782 will be specifically promoting are our San Antonio Music & Media Mixer, set for Thursday, April 5 with location TBA, and a showcase on Saturday, April 7 at Wonderland of the Americas. The mixer is an open invite to any member of the San Antonio music community, and the showcase is being held as a city event free to all ages.
By participating in LMW all we ask is that you collaborate with us in making the campaign a success. We want to make submissions to the calendar easier this year, so we are sending out a form to log each show. Aside from keeping an online calendar that details all shows submitted, we will be hanging posters at each venue to show that you are participating in LMW.
Another thing that has become a part of our vision for LMW is incorporating more FREE shows and more ALL AGES shows. Not every venue can do either of these things, but we encourage the ones that can to do so. FREE shows and ALL AGES shows will be noted to help the public find those family friendly, light on the budget events.
In the end, we just want everyone to do what they are good at, producing quality events with the audience in mind to show appreciation and unity for everyone involved. San Antonio’s music community continues to grow and together we can make a big impact on how this city treats music and the arts.
There is much more communication to take place over the coming months as we close in on LMW, and we openly accept all responses, so please contact us with any questions or comments.
